A licensed professional counselor (LPC) is a mental health provider who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling and who has met all requirements set forth by the state licensure board to provide quality mental health care.
The second “C” (LPC“C”) denotes advanced clinical experience and knowledge as required by the state licensure board that allows for independent practice (meaning, without the need for supervision).
The “S” (LPCC-“S”) denotes advanced experience and knowledge in clinical supervision as required by the state licensure board that allows for supervision of LPCs and counselors-in-training.
A licensed art therapist (LPAT) is a provider who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in art therapy (or a related degree) and who has met all requirements set forth by the state licensure board to provide quality art therapy care.
A Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) is the highest-level art therapy competency among registered art therapists (ATR). This credential is earned by a professional who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in art therapy and who has met qualifying graduate-level education and training outlined by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) to provide quality therapy and healing using media and the creative process; passing a national examination; and demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of art therapy theories and clinical skills.
Madeline (Maddie) Skemp (pronouns: she/her) is an experienced licensed professional clinical counselor- supervisor who works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Her specialty interests include: mood disorders, life transitions, career development, trauma, and integrating creativity into counseling practice. She utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client to assist and accomplish identified goals.
Maddie completed her advanced education at Ohio University, earning a bachelor’s degree in studio arts and a master’s degree in counseling and art therapy from Ursuline College. She has a strong love of lifetime learning and growing.
Prior to private practice, Maddie worked with diverse clients in community mental health settings. Over the last 8 years, she has developed the use of creativity as a tool.
Maddie is a Licensed Professional Art Therapist (LPAT) and Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) who sees the value of art making in health and wellness. She currently holds certifications in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDR) and art therapy with extensive knowledge in Dialectical Behavioral Health (DBT) and other treatment modalities.
Maddie’s approach to counseling is a dialectical approach due to believing two things can be opposite and still be true. She believes empowerment and growth can come from within and is focused on how trauma can influence and challenge behavior in a way that can be adapted to be resourceful and empowering. Maddie also believes in the collaboration of therapy and utilizes creativity to build on strengths and increase internal resources. She is known for humor, psychoeducation, compassionate listening, problem solving, and her ability to create safety for vulnerability and validation.
Her strengths include: welcoming spirit, learning, creativity, humor, and the ability to see the bigger picture in life.
Maddie’s supervision training includes supervised supervision from seasoned and respected counselors, and trainings to develop her designation and grow in her work. She has experience supervising counselors at all levels of development in the community mental health setting.
