A licensed professional counselor (LPC) is a mental health provider who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling and who has met all requirements set forth by the state licensure board to provide quality mental health care.

The second “C” (LPC“C”) denotes advanced clinical experience and knowledge as required by the state licensure board that allows for independent practice (meaning, without the need for supervision).

Benjamin Mickey (pronouns: he/him) is an experienced licensed professional clinical counselor who primarily works with adults. His specialty interests include: men’s issues, interpersonal concerns, trauma and grief support, life coaching, and integrating holistic approaches into counseling practice. He utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client.

Ben earned his undergraduate degree from Kent State University in psychology while also serving as president of the Psychology Club. He continued his graduate studies at Kent State, earning a master’s degree in community mental health counseling. To further his expertise in evidence-based treatments, Ben completed specialized training seminars in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). He has a strong love of lifetime learning and implementing health and wellness into counseling practice.

Prior to private practice, Ben has worked with diverse clients in college, community mental health, and crisis intervention settings. Over the last 6 years, he has had many unique opportunities that have contributed to his passion for helping others and his clinical approach. These include assisting clients in managing academic stressors and phase of life problems, being a provider on interdisciplinary treatment teams, serving as a crisis counselor who performed pre-screen assessments and placed clients in a higher level of care as needed, and completing an internship at a detoxification treatment facility. Demonstrating his passion for trauma work, Ben has led a trauma-informed care support team for staff and clients alike at a community mental health agency.

Ben’s approach to counseling is holistic and person-centered, with an emphasis on understanding a client’s life goals and ways to obtain them. He believes that the power of the therapeutic relationship, rooted in authenticity and genuineness, can foster a healing and purpose-driven journey that clients can use to actualize the best version of their life. Ben focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. His mission is to help individuals develop healthier ways of thinking and responding to various situations, leading to improved mental well-being. He may incorporate worksheets, role-plays, and homework to complete between sessions to aid in therapeutic progress. In addition to being a non-judgmental, compassionate listener he provides guidance and feedback throughout the process of learning and applying various techniques. He is known for using humor, psychoeducation, imagery, behavioral experiments, exposure, activity scheduling, relaxation techniques, behavioral activation, and self-monitoring.

His strengths include: empathy, active listening, communication, collaboration, problem-solving skills, flexibility, and patience.
