Catherine Hommer (pronouns: she/her) is a licensed professional counselor who works with adults. Her areas of interest include: anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and career development. She utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client.
Catherine earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Penn State and her master's degree in counseling psychology at Frostburg State University in Maryland. She also co-led a research project during her time in school, studying the effects of COVID on students. Catherine has also been a part of research teams studying child-parent attachment interactions, hostage-taking behavior, and clinical supervisor-supervisee relationships. She has a strong love for research and continued learning.
Prior to private practice, Catherine has worked with diverse clients in in-patient settings, community mental health, intensive outpatient groups, and university counseling centers. Over the last nine years, she has had opportunities to be on many interdisciplinary treatment teams, create and engage in outreach for the communities with which she has worked, and run several groups for group therapy, including process groups for LGBTQ+ folks, women's issues groups, and psychoeducational groups related to decreasing anxiety and depression.
Catherine's approach to counseling is interpersonally focused and relational. She believes that when provided safety, warmth, genuineness, and the tools for change, clients can make the growth and change they want from within. She also wants clients to feel empowered in their own change, making sure client’s strengths are highlighted in treatment. Catherine uses tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness.
Catherine's strengths include warmth, humor, love of learning, and being readily open to feedback.
