A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Courtney Seckinger (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with adolescents and adults. Her clinical interests include: girls’ and women’s issues, adjustment and life transitions, academic concerns, and executive functioning. Courtney uses evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s unique needs, goals, and experiences.
Courtney completed her advanced education at Northwood University, earning a bachelor’s degree with honors in business. She obtained her intervention specialist license for grades K-12 from Notre Dame College. Courtney is currently a master’s student at John Carroll University completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling. She has completed specialized coursework in motivational interviewing and academic intervention strategies.
Prior to private practice, Courtney worked in the education field for over twenty years, supporting children and adolescents across a variety of academic and emotional settings. Most recently, she worked at a high school emotional and behavioral support unit where she focused on helping adolescents develop self-management, self-awareness, and social awareness skills. Her experience includes supporting students navigating neurodivergence, mental health concerns, addiction, and LGBTQ+ and gender-related issues. Courtney has also received specialized training in suicide prevention and emotional regulation through the Crisis Prevention Institute.
Courtney’s approach to counseling is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and empowerment. She strives to create a supportive and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, understood, and encouraged to grow. Courtney believes in meeting clients where they are and helping them build on their strengths while developing practical tools to navigate life’s challenges. Her approach is individualized, compassionate, and focused on fostering resilience, self-awareness, and meaningful change.
Her strengths include: her ability to connect authentically with others; approaching each person with empathy, openness, and respect for their unique experiences; and helping clients recognize different perspectives and build confidence in their own strengths and potential.
