
A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Courtney Thaman (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with adolescents, adults, and older adults. Her specialty interests include: chronic and terminal illness & disability, LGBTQ+ & identity issues, addiction, neurodivergence, and integrating holistic wellness into treatment. She uses evidence-based treatment approaches and integrates methods to fit each client’s responsiveness and needs.
Courtney completed her advanced education at Kent State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in LGBT studies. She is currently a master’s student at Baldwin Wallace completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling. She has a passion for education and is always looking for more opportunities to enrich her understanding of people.
Prior to private practice, Courtney worked with survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence, offering crisis intervention through in-person and phone interactions, accompanying medical examinations, and providing advocacy through legal proceedings. She holds certification in psychological first aid to be able to assist in various crisis settings.
Beyond her clinical work, Courtney has extensive experience in psychological research and experience with the process of publishing a journal article with Kent State University.
She also has volunteer experience with hospice patients which helped shape the direction for her master’s program and reinforced her vocation. Through her experience with hospice patients, she was provided insight to her life purpose of being present and helping others process through concerns in their moments of need.
Courtney’s approach to counseling is client-centered while working primarily from cognitive behavioral therapies. Her clinical focus is on acceptance to minimize distress and looking at what factors are within a client’s ability to control. She believes that alignment to personal values will create a more satisfactory, meaningful life, but tools are essential for long-term success to staying on a chosen path. She is known to bring a calming presence, non-judgmental & compassionate ear, and an authentic energy that promotes openness to her sessions. She utilizes humor, relatability, metaphors, psychoeducation, mindful meditation & somatic exercises, and other interactive activities in her clinical work.
Her strengths include: intersectional- & systemic-based conceptualization, research, education, & diverse life experience, highlighting strengths, reframing experiences, challenging thoughts & perspectives, skill building, social awareness, and collaborative problem-solving.
