A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Elizabeth Horton (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with young adults, adults, couples, and families. Her specialty interests include: anxiety, stress, life transitions, identity development, self-esteem, emotional regulation, sexual health, relationships, multicultural counseling, and concerns affecting underserved populations. She utilizes evidence-based approaches that are culturally responsive, integrative, sex-positive, and tailored to each client’s needs, values, family system, and lived experiences.

Elizabeth completed her advanced education at Tiffin University, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and managerial studies. She is currently a master’s student at John Carroll University completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling. Her specialized coursework includes counseling theories, group counseling, human growth and development, assessment, addiction, multicultural counseling, and mindfulness-based practices. Her international learning experiences in Vietnam and Rishikesh, India, have broadened her understanding of culture, family, community, wellness, and healing.

Prior to joining Wellness Grove, Elizabeth has experience supporting young adults and adults from diverse backgrounds through her work in higher education and community service. She is also a certified sound healer with training in mindfulness, grounding, emotional regulation, and holistic wellness practices. When appropriate and welcomed by the client, she may incorporate mindfulness and grounding techniques into the counseling experience.

Beyond her clinical training, Elizabeth serves as Treasurer for the Ohio Association for Specialists in Group Work, a specialized state division of the Ohio Counseling Association. Her professional and community involvement reflects her commitment to group work, multicultural awareness, inclusion, and advocacy for underserved communities. As a first-generation graduate student, she also understands the value of support, representation, and access to essential resources.

Elizabeth’s approach to counseling is collaborative, strength-based, culturally responsive, and adaptable. She recognizes that healing and personal growth may be influenced by the individual as well as family, culture, community, relationships, and other important systems. Elizabeth strives to create an inclusive and nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe discussing their experiences, identifying their strengths, and working toward lasting change.

Her strengths include: compassion, cultural curiosity, advocacy, open-mindedness, a love of learning, and the ability to see each client within the larger context of their life.
