A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Emily Thompson (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, and adults. Her specialty interests include: anxiety, depression, life transitions, ADHD, self-esteem concerns, and trauma-related challenges. She utilizes a person-centered, strengths-based approach to meet the unique needs and goals of each client.

Emily completed her advanced education at Kent State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is currently a master’s student at her alma mater completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling. She is committed to lifelong learning and continuously seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge of evidence-based practices and effective interventions to best support her clients.

Prior to joining Wellness Grove, Emily has developed clinical experience through Kent State University’s on-site counseling center. There, she provided counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults experiencing a myriad of clinical concerns under direct supervision.

Beyond her clinical training, Emily has gained valuable experience supporting individuals through her work with the Victim Assistance Program. There, she provided crisis intervention, emotional support, and advocacy to individuals affected by trauma. This experience bolstered her passion for creating a warm, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered.

Emily's approach to counseling is collaborative, compassionate, and rooted in the belief that every client has the capacity for growth and meaningful change. She strives to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Emily primarily draws from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and person-centered principles, while tailoring treatment to each client's unique strengths, goals, and needs. She values building strong therapeutic relationships and incorporates psychoeducation, mindfulness, and practical skill-building to help clients develop lasting coping strategies and greater psychological flexibility.

Her strengths include: empathy, compassion, open-mindedness, persistence, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to helping others grow and achieve their goals.
