Working Hours

A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Frank Ritenour (pronouns: he/him) is a counselor trainee who works with adolescents, young adults, and adults. His specialty interests include: trauma-informed care, anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ support, identity development, life transitions, coping skills, and meaning-making. Frank utilizes a collaborative, person-centered, and trauma-informed approach that integrates evidence-based techniques while honoring each client’s unique strengths, values, lived experiences, and goals.

Frank completed his advanced education at Bowling Green State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in cultural geography and a minor in fine arts. He is currently a master’s student at John Carroll University completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling.

Prior to private practice, Frank worked with adolescents, young adults, and adults in school-based and community mental health settings. His work has included supporting clients experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, family conflict, housing instability, identity-related stress, and challenges with emotional regulation. Through these experiences, he has developed a strong interest in trauma-informed care, adolescent and adult mental health, men’s issues, crisis support, rapport-building, and helping clients identify strengths, coping skills, and sources of meaning. He continues to seek learning opportunities related to trauma-informed counseling, men’s mental health, and evidence-based approaches that can be adapted to each client’s needs.

Beyond his clinical training, Frank brings experience in community-based work with youth and young adults, including outreach, crisis support, resource connection, and advocacy. These experiences have shaped his belief that counseling should honor the full context of a client’s life, including relationships, culture, community, identity, and access to support. Frank values warmth, creativity, collaboration, and authenticity in his work, and he strives to create a counseling space where clients feel respected, understood, and empowered.

Frank’s approach to counseling is collaborative, person-centered, and trauma-informed. He believes that meaningful growth happens when clients feel safe, respected, and supported as they explore their experiences, strengths, values, and goals. Frank uses warmth, curiosity, humor, and creativity to help clients better understand themselves and develop practical coping skills. He strives to create a counseling space that is nonjudgmental, affirming, and responsive to each client’s unique needs and lived experiences.

His strengths include: kindness, empathy, creativity, curiosity, and a deep love of learning.
