A licensed social worker (LSW) is a mental health provider who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in social work and who has met all requirements set forth by the state licensure board to provide quality mental health care under supervision.
A licensed independent social worker (LISW) is a mental health provider who holds a master’s or doctoral degree in social work and who has met all requirements set forth by the state licensure board to provide quality mental health care without supervision.
The “S” (LISW-“S”) denotes advanced experience and knowledge in social work supervision as required by the state licensure board that allows for supervision of LSWs and social workers-in-training.
A Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Level 2 (CCTP-II) has met all the training requirements in order to become specialized in providing advanced treatment related to trauma, including being able to help with post-traumatic triggers; harmful coping strategies; and overwhelming emotions, such as shame, anger, anxiety, fear, and depression.
A Certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapist has met all the training requirements in order to become specialized in providing EMDR, an evidence-based psychotherapy that has been shown to effectively treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related issues.
Gina Bowers (pronouns: she/her) is an experienced licensed independent social worker- supervisor who works with adults. Her specialty interests include: survivors of sexual violence, complex PTSD, individuals with dissociative minds, and researching more creative and innovative approaches to working with the effects of trauma on the brain. She utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client.
Gina completed her advanced education at Malone University, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work. She also earned a master’s degree in clinical social work from The Ohio State University. She is passionate about the area of trauma and has completed hundreds of hours of specialized trauma-focused trainings/certifications including becoming a Level II Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, a Certified EMDR Therapist, and a Certified Victims Advocate. She has a strong love of lifetime learning.
Prior to private practice, Gina worked with a diverse group of clients in a community mental health setting.
Over the last 15 years, she has had many unique opportunities – from working in multiple permanent supportive housing properties for individuals who were previously homeless, to becoming a trauma therapist, to leading a local sexual assault program- that have contributed to her passion for helping others. Additionally, she has been able to have a strong impact within the Stark County community by leading committees, securing state funding for local survivors of sexual violence, coordinating specialized trainings for professionals, advocating with state legislators, and spearheading efforts to reduce sexual violence within the community. She often utilizes her collaborative spirit and energy to advocate for and empower others.
Gina’s approach to counseling is a strength-based approach as she believes each person has all of the skills, gifts, and intuition inside of them to reach their goals, and she provides the safe and empathetic environment to achieve this. Through using curiosity and encouraging “just noticing”, Gina empowers clients to discover their strengths and create new pathways towards healing.
Her strengths include: humor, kindness, empathy, and the lifelong love of learning.
Gina’s supervision training includes multiple years of supervised supervision from seasoned social work and counseling experts, along with advanced continuing education courses to maintain her designation and passion for supporting other social workers. She has experience supervising social workers at all levels of development in community mental health and private practice settings. Additionally, she has provided trainings on mandated reporting, trauma informed care, trauma and the brain, and advocacy.
Her approach to supervision is strongly rooted in person-centered theory and the belief that helping to develop other social workers in the field is one of the greatest legacies of her career.
