A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Kylie Smith (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with emerging adults and adults. Her specialty interests include: eating disorders, body image issues, stress and anxiety, issues with spirituality, sexual dysfunctions, and paraphilic disorders. She approaches sessions with an open mind, non-judgmental outlook, and intentional effort to utilize approaches that help clients develop new coping skills.

Kylie received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and family studies from Baldwin Wallace University. She is currently completing her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at John Carroll University. In addition to her coursework, she completed research studies in the specialty area of eating disorders and has presented at regional conferences.

Before joining Wellness Grove, Kylie completed her counseling practicum experience at a sex therapy private practice, where she focused on treating sexual dysfunctions, addressing communication and intimacy issues, and helping clients navigate alternative and polyamorous relationships. She also has previous experience working as an intake coordinator for an eating disorder private practice and has experience in eating disorder assessment.

Outside of her academic training and clinical work, Kylie has been engaged in a variety of volunteer opportunities. Among her experiences are working with youth trauma survivors in Chicago and volunteering with suicide prevention walks. Most notably, while Kylie attended Baldwin Wallace University she was a Brain Fellow and established an on-campus organization that focuses on educating and providing resources for students with eating disorders and body image issues.

Kylie approaches counseling sessions from a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, emphasizing the reframing of negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs. She believes in the importance of regulating the nervous system and how inner calmness and strength can promote positive treatment outcomes. Kylie also believes in the power of spirituality and how finding meaning and purpose can assist with life transitions and existential dilemmas. She enjoys incorporating existential and transpersonal psychology themes when appropriate.

Kylie’s strengths include: directness, honesty, empathy, openness, and promoting assertiveness and empowerment.
