A marriage and family therapist trainee (MFTT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional marriage and family therapist. Marriage & Family Therapist Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Kyra Horvat (pronouns: she/her) is a marriage and family therapist trainee who works with individuals, couples, and families. Her specialty interests include: adjustment and life transitions, communication and conflict resolution, girls and women’s issues, neurodivergence, and relational issues. Utilizing a systemic approach to treatment, she integrates evidence-based practices to tailor treatment to each client.

Kyra completed her advanced education at Kent State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. She is currently a master’s student at The University of Akron completing a degree in marriage and family therapy.

Prior to joining Wellness Grove, Kyra completed a semester-long practicum at The University of Akron’s Clinic for Individual and Family Counseling. There, she worked with clients to navigate life transitions and their unique relational challenges. Along with practicum experience, Kyra volunteered at Wellness Grove as a non-clinical intern beginning in June of 2023 and continued in the position until her transition to a clinical intern in the Fall of 2026. As a non-clinical intern, she supported clinical operations through resource collection, psychoeducational development, administrative assistance, and community engagement projects.

Kyra’s approach to counseling is integrative and collaborative, based on her belief that clients are the experts of their own lives, and each client has their own unique needs. She focuses on creating a safe space for couples and families to improve their communication and connect with one another. She draws from a range of systemic approaches, including Bowenian, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), Gottman, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). She utilizes humor, psychoeducation, and empathy with the aim of fostering a supportive space where the client feels understood.

Her strengths include: humor, empathy, curiosity, honesty, and ability to recognize patterns within relationships and interactions.
