A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Ngoc Tran (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, and adults. Her specialty interests include: anxiety, depression, life transitions, cultural challenges, identity development, personal growth and navigating daily life stressors. Ngoc takes a holistic, person-centered and evidence-based approach to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for each individual client.
Ngoc completed her advanced education at Fulbright University Vietnam, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in arts and media studies. She is currently a master’s student at John Carroll University, earning a degree in clinical mental health counseling. She is committed to expanding her knowledge and skills to better support those she serves.
Prior to private practice, Ngoc has experience working in academic and international settings while supporting diverse populations including students, youth, and marginalized communities. Through her roles in student organizations and professional settings, she has facilitated events, led teams, and contributed to initiatives that promote mental health awareness and community engagement.
Beyond her clinical work, Ngoc serves as a graduate assistant for the counseling department at John Carroll University where she assists faculty with departmental initiatives, research projects, and helps coordinate academic and professional events. These experiences provide her with greater exposure to the field and enrich her perspective on supporting clients through evidence-based, culturally responsive care.
Ngoc’s approach to counseling is holistic and culturally inclusive, integrating motivational interviewing (MI) with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). She has a particular interest in expressive therapies, understanding that creative and nonverbal modalities can enhance emotional expression and insight. She values each client’s uniqueness and believes therapy can be a collaborative journey where clients are supported in exploring their experiences and empowered to create meaningful change.
Her strengths include: empathy, attentiveness, patience, creativity, openness to learning, and the ability to create a supportive space for others.
