A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Sharon Williams (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, and transitional adults. Her specialty interests include: depression, anxiety, girls’ and women’s issues, life transitions, relational issues, substance use issues, trauma, and parenting challenges. She utilizes evidenced-based treatment approaches along with person-centered approaches that are uniquely tailored to each client.
Sharon completed her advanced education at The University of Akron earning a bachelors degree in psychology. She is currently a master’s student at Walsh University completing a dual degree in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling. At Walsh University, Sharon has taken coursework catered towards children, and has engaged in many seminars to expand her knowledge on child counseling. She is certified in adult and youth mental health first aid and psychological first aid. She is dedicated and committed to expanding her knowledge beyond the classroom and providing the best care to her clients.
Prior to private practice, Sharon has worked with middle school and high school aged children in a school setting.
Over the last four years she has served as a substitute teacher and classroom monitor to grades 6 through 12. She has worked alongside children in a classroom on core topics and extracurriculars to ensure they are having their needs met both academically and personally. Alongside her employment, Sharon coaches high school volleyball and is very passionate about helping youth find their purpose both on and off the court. Her work with youth has empowered her desire to continue helping them therapeutically.
Sharon’s approach to counseling is emotion-focused and person-centered, grounded in the belief that meaningful growth begins with relationships rooted in safety, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard. She strives to create a warm space where clients feel seen, heard, and accepted exactly as they are, so they may feel empowered to explore their feelings and experiences at their own pace. She works to help children and their caregivers build on strengths, deepen emotional awareness, and help create healthier patterns of interaction.
Her strengths include: empathy, creativity, active listening, being able to see things from different perspectives, compassion, the ability to connect with others through authenticity, and being a lifelong learner.
