BODY IMAGE

Body image: Thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors related to your own body.

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Many individuals do not like what they see while looking at themselves in the mirror. A heavy focus on imperfections or flaws related to one’s body and appearance, or the avoidance of looking in the mirror altogether, are signs of negative body image.

Experiences that may contribute to negative body image include:

  • Being criticized by a parent for your appearance or having strict rules about food while growing up
  • Observing and/or participating in negative conversations with peers about body image (such as fat talk or diet talk)
  • Engaging in activities such as sports (gymnastics, dance, wrestling) that focus heavily on body size and appearance
  • Experiencing teasing and/or rejection related to body image (such as weight-teasing)
  • Past experience with physical and/or sexual abuse
  • Consumption of media (such as TV, social media, the Internet) that promote unrealistic and unobtainable beauty standards
  • Changes to the body during puberty that are experienced as uncomfortable
  • Chronic illnesses such as cancer and endocrine disorders
  • Having a visual disfigurement

In America, body dissatisfaction is the cultural norm.

Body image affects people of all ages, genders, races, and abilities. Negative body image can impact many areas of one’s life such as physical, emotional, mental, and social wellness.

Negative body image is related to:

  • Eating disorders
  • Depression
  • Impaired sexual functioning/sexual dissatisfaction
  • Dramatic attempts to alter appearance (cosmetic surgeries, excessive exercise, steroid abuse)
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal ideation
