SUICIDAL IDEATION

Suicidal ideation (or suicidal thoughts): Thinking about, considering, or planning to engage in behaviors to die by suicide.

HOME > Services > Areas of Counseling > Suicidal Ideation

Suicidal ideation can occur when a person is experiencing stress or other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, substance use issues, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Suicide cuts across the life span, affecting young children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Groups at greater risk of suicide include veterans, LGBTQ+, youth and young adults, men, and middle-aged adults. Negative impacts are experienced not only by the person having suicidal thoughts, but others (such as family, friends, and community) who are survivors of suicide (see our grief and loss page).

Risk factors for suicidal ideation/suicide are:

  • Previous suicide attempt
  • Feeling helpless, hopeless, and/or worthless
  • Isolation/loneliness
  • Having a mental health issue
  • History of self-injury

  • Family history of mental health issues and/or suicide
  • Experiencing a stressful life event and/or hostile environment
  • Chronic pain or physical illness
  • Substance use issues
  • History of childhood abuse or trauma

Suicidal ideation is among the leading causes of death in the United States.

Common symptoms include:

  • Isolation/withdrawal from normal activities
  • Feeling hopeless/trapped
  • Talking about, or constantly thinking about, death or suicide
  • Giving away possessions and getting affairs in order
  • Increased mood swings and/or self-destructive behavior

  • Increased substance use
  • Obtaining lethal means such as pills or firearms
  • Saying “goodbye” or making amends
  • Feeling extremely anxious/irritable

The best ways to prevent suicide are early detection and treatment.
