Mental health issues are not a normal part of aging. When left untreated, mental health issues can contribute to a diminished quality of life. Because of the strong linkage between mental and physical health, aging well should include attention to overall wellness.

Many mental health issues experienced by older adults are also experienced by younger adults, but the presentation of symptoms and the rates are age-related. Older adults can encounter challenges that occur later in life (such as the decline of physical and cognitive health), as well as strengths (such as wisdom), related to aging that uniquely impact their experience with mental health issues. There are also some diagnoses, such as dementia, that affect older adults at greater rates than younger adults.
