CONTACT INFO

A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Harley Summers (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, and adults. Her specialty interests include: anxiety, depression, life transitions, adjustments, relationship issues, building self-esteem, and confidence. As a clinician, Harley aims to create a strong foundation and provide a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their stories. Harley utilizes treatment approaches that is evidence-based and tailored to individual client needs.

Harley completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Mount Union with a minor background in sociology, peacebuilding and social justice. She is currently a master’s student at Kent State University completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling. During her time at Kent State University, she has taken specialized coursework and is a member of Chi Sigma Iota, an honor society that promotes professional excellence in counseling. She has a lifelong passion for learning and a desire to hear people’s stories.

Prior to private practice, Harley worked as a student assistant for a diverse group of clients at the Kent State Counseling Center. Throughout her counseling education, she has had the opportunity to strengthen and develop core skills that foster the well-being of her clients. While working at the Counseling Center, Harley was able to apply what she had learned through coursework while expanding upon her skills and knowledge as she continues to grow as a counselor.

Harley approaches counseling sessions from a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and somatic background. This allows her clients to reframe negative thought patterns and beliefs while staying connected to their body and their feelings. She also utilizes dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and mindfulness-based practices to help ground clients in a non-judgmental and validating atmosphere. She often uses humor, creative practices, and psychoeducation within the counseling session.

Her strengths include: empathy, kindness, love of learning, honesty, and directness.
