CONTACT INFO

A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Anee Garrett (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with individuals, couples, and families. Her specialty interests include cognitive behavioral therapy, postpartum mental health in black women, trauma informed care, and culturally responsive counseling. Anee utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based and client centered while honoring clients lived experiences, strengths, and social context.

Anee completed her advanced education at California University of Pennsylvania, earning a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies, social work. She is currently a master’s student at John Carroll University, earning a degree in clinical mental health counseling. Her academic training has included coursework in cognitive behavioral therapy, family and couples counseling, assessment in counseling, trauma and crisis intervention, and multicultural counseling. This educational foundation emphasizes ethical practice, critical thinking, and intentional clinical skill development. Her strong commitment to lifelong learning continues to guide professional growth and academic engagement.

Prior to private practice, Anee’s professional work includes community-based and outpatient counseling settings. She has supported adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and family-related stressors. She has experience in completing clinical assessments, providing individual counseling, and collaborating with multidisciplinary treatment teams.

Her clinical work has included supporting diverse populations such as young adults, parents, and individuals navigating complex life transitions. Her dedication to trauma informed and culturally responsive practice shape her clinical identity.

Beyond her clinical training, Anee brings lived experience, advocacy, and a deep commitment to equity into her professional work. She approaches counseling with heightened awareness of systemic barriers, resilience, and the real-life challenges clients often face outside of the therapy room. These experiences form a grounded, compassionate approach that values both strength and vulnerability in the healing process. This perspective strengthens her ability to create affirming, accessible spaces where clients feel seen, heard, and supported.

Anee’s approach to counseling is collaborative, structured, and grounded in compassion. She believes meaningful change happens when clients feel safe, respected, and empowered to understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Sessions often include psychoeducation, skill building, and practical tools that clients can apply in daily life, while still leaving room for reflection and emotional processing. She values meeting clients where they are and working at a pace that feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

Her strengths include: empathy, cultural awareness, consistency, reflective listening, and the ability to balance structure with warmth in the therapeutic relationship.
