A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Emily Pfefferl (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, and young adults. Her specialty interests include: trauma, anxiety, relationship and attachment issues, communication and conflict resolution, and holistic wellness. She utilizes treatment techniques rooted in attachment and existential therapies.
Emily earned her bachelor’s degree at Kent State University in public health. Her public health background strengthens her ability to address broader social determinants of mental health in client care. She is completing her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Walden University and plans to graduate in November 2025.
Prior to her work in counseling, Emily gained valuable experience as a registered behavior technician, where she provided behavioral therapy to children and advocated on their behalf. She also worked as a virtual advisor, supporting individuals in gaining insight into their lives and navigating personal challenges.
Beyond her clinical work, Emily dedicates time to researching the mind-body connection, dream analysis, healing astrology, and alternative therapies, further blending these insights into her practice. She draws inspiration from volunteering, travel, and cultural immersion, which deepen her understanding of diverse worldviews and enhance her empathic approach to counseling.
Emily’s approach to counseling is trauma-informed and person-centered. She believes compassion and relationship-building are the foundation of personal healing and growth. Emily strives to create a nonjudgemental and validating atmosphere, often using humor, psychoeducation, and mindfulness in the therapy room. Her main focus in sessions is processing childhood trauma and examining how past experiences show up in current life patterns.
Her strengths include: empathy, authenticity, humor, and social intelligence.
