A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.
Esha Parekh (she/her/hers) is a counselor trainee who works with diverse populations, from children to middle-aged adults, across racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Her specialty interests include: self-esteem, identity development, anxiety, depression, stress, and life transitions. She utilizes treatment approaches that are both evidence-based and specific for each individual client.
Esha completed her advanced education at The Ohio State University, earning a bachelor of science in human development and family science with a minor in social and personality psychology. She is currently a master’s student at Kent State University completing her degree in clinical mental health counseling. Her training includes specialized coursework in motivational interviewing, counseling children, and family therapy. She is committed to continuous, flexible learning to best support the clients she serves.
Prior to private practice, Esha worked as a counselor-in-training at Kent State University’s Counseling Center, helping students and community members with their anxiety and depression, emotional regulation, executive functioning, and identity development.
Esha’s academic work has focused on multicultural and bicultural experiences; disability studies; minority stress theory; and racial, ethnic, gender, and sexually diverse youth identity development. Throughout her training, she has supported individuals in various settings, from assistant teacher for young children at a recreation center and college students at The Ohio State University, to providing supplemental support for students in a high school special education department.
Esha’s approach to counseling is collaborate and client centered. She believes that every individual has the innate ability to make the changes they desire in their lives. She sees each person’s experiences and how they shape their identity as uniquely their own, serving as a listening ear and guiding presence. She supports clients in building practical tools that foster greater flexibility, balance, and inner peace. Utilizing eclectic and adaptable therapeutic styles, Esha’s work is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), strengths-based therapy, humanistic approaches, and reality therapy, among many others.
Her strengths include: attentive listening, a deep sense of unconditional positive regard, and creating a supportive and affirming space where clients feel genuinely heard, respected, and empowered.
