CONTACT INFO

A counselor trainee (CT) is a graduate counseling student seeking licensure as a professional counselor. Counselor Trainees have the same scope of practice as a professional counselor, but require much closer supervision during the training process.

Kara Corbett (pronouns: she/her) is a counselor trainee who works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Her specialty interests include: grief and loss, PTSD, depression, anxiety, suicide prevention and loss, non-suicidal self-injury, and girls’ and women’s issues. She utilizes treatment approaches that are trauma informed and evidence-based.

Kara completed her education at Kent State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Kara also earned an associate’s degree in specialized technology in funeral directing and embalming at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and is a Certified Grief Recovery Method Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute. She is currently a master’s student at Malone University completing a degree in clinical mental health counseling.

Prior to private practice, Kara served her community as a 9-1-1 emergency dispatcher and lead trainer for over 13 years and was awarded several accommodations for her role in handling multiple critical incidents. Transitioning into a career as a licensed funeral director and embalmer, Kara felt a strong connection to grief work. This led her to further her desire to serve her community through counseling those who have experienced loss and trauma in their lives.

Beyond her clinical work, Kara is an active member of the Carroll County Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention Coalitions. She also currently holds educational classes to lead others through their losses with the Grief Recovery Method and QPR Gatekeeper training to teach community members how to assist with someone who may be thinking of suicide. Understanding the importance of self-care, Kara also is a Certified Knitting and Crochet Instructor through the Craft Yarn Counsel and enjoys teaching these skills to others, expressing her own creativity, and using her skills for various charity organizations. These roles fulfill her calling to help others in need through communities that she serves.

Kara’s approach to counseling is cognitive-behavioral and reality focused as she believes that every individual has the inner strength and capacity to create meaningful, positive change. Kara takes a relational approach to therapy, emphasizing the importance of connection – to oneself and to others – as a vital part of the healing and growth process. She meets clients where they are and adapts her approach based on their needs. In addition to being a compassionate and non-judgmental listener, she is also a collaborative strength-builder and problem-solver.

Her strengths include: kindness & empathy, ability to listen, calmness & effectiveness during crisis situations, and a love for learning and teaching others.
